A Personal Ghost Story Part II
By: Alethea Baldwin
We moved to Russell Springs the year I was 12. Anyone familiar
with the part of the country and the state of Kentucky is well aware that this
area is wrought with folk lore and mysterious happenings. My father had gotten a
position at Wolf Creek Dam there and
my parents had decided it was best if we went ahead and moved down there so that
dad wouldn't have to drive all that way each day. We had looked at houses
in surrounding counties, but could not find anything that suited us as a family.
We wound up moving to a small house at the corner of Clifty Creek Road and US
HWY 127. I was miserable, I didn't know anyone, all of my friends were back in
Boyle County and all I wanted to do was move back to where they were.
My summer was spent exploring the field behind my house and watching for the
HUGE boats that people would bring down to put on Lake Cumberland.
School started that Septemeber at Union Chapel Elementary school and I made a
few friends which made my time there a bit more bearable. One of the young
ladies I become friends with had family who had always lived in that area of
Jamestown. After the first week of school she invited me back to her house to
spend a weekend. I happily accepted and rode the bus home with her that friday,
I was so excited!
When we arrived at her house after school I immediately felt a feeling of
trepidation, just walking on the front porch. I brushed this off as nerves,
since I had not met her sisters yet, and wanted them to like me as well. When we
enetered the house I was delighted to see that it was similar to the house we
had moved into. The house was larger, with a total of 4 bedrooms where ours only
had 2 but the layout was the same.
That night my friends mother made lasagne and salad, and everyone was at the
table, my friend, her two sisters, her parents, her grandmother and myself. As
we were eating dinner, I remember that my stomach began to get butterflies and I
felt almost light headed, but with the most strange sensation of the hair on the
back of my neck standing up. I looked around the table and no one seemed to
notice anything amiss except for the Grandmother, who was staring into the
living room, at a chair.

I too, began to look at the chair, just more or less to see what she was looking
at. At first I seen nothing, simply a chair, but the more I looked the more I
noticed. Not with the chair, but what was happening AROUND the chair. It looked
almost smokey around the chair, even though no one in the house smoked. My
friend caught me looking at the chair and mentioned that it was her Grandads.
That it had been his favorite chair and he always sat there. When I looked back
at the chair, the smoke was gone and grandma had went back to eating her dinner.
The night wore on and we were excited that my friends mother was going to take
us to rent some movies. Keep in mind this was a big deal then as VCR's had only
been out a couple of years at that time. (Yes I know im showing my age) We went
and rented quite a few movies and headed back to my friends house. We had
dragged our blankets and pillows into the living room to have a all night fest
of movie watching. Her parents had went to bed and her older sister was asleep
on the couch behind us. Evidently we had fell asleep at some point during our
marathon movie session because I woke up to the tv being all staticy and making
that noise that it does when there is no station.
I sat up to turn the tv off and just as I reached my hand out it got very very
cold, just my hand, and the TV snapped off. I sat there for a moment, trying to
figure out what happened. I scooted back closer to the couch and as I did, I
noticed my friends hair moving, as if a breeze was blowing it, but it was only
in one spot. I scooted back as close as I could get to the couch without
actually being on it with my friends sister. AT this point every hair on my body
was standing up. It was a extremely uncomfortable sensation. At this point I'm
not sure what happened next. All I remember from that point on was that I was
crying VERY loudly, and nothing anyone could do was calming me down. My friends
mother called my parents and they came and got me, and I was frantic almost all
the way home and unable to calm down.
After about a hour I started to calm down and realized I was exhausted, so tired
almost to the point that I couldnt make my legs move to go to bed.
I never did go back to my friends house to stay all night again, and to this day
even though we travel to Jamestown frequently, everytime I pass this house I
feel panicked. I have also learned over the years that everytime I have
experienced any type of haunting that I get that bone deep exhausted feeling
within a couple of hours of the experience.
I think this is one experience that will have to remain a mystery as I have no
desire to enter that home again.
You can read more about my experiences at my website!
