    A Personal Ghost Story

    By: Alethea Baldwin

When I was 12 my family and I were relocating. My father was accepting a position in Russell Springs, Kentucky and as my family lived in the Danville area we really did not want to move all the way down there. So my parents compromised and decided that we would move on the other end of Lincoln County almost on the Casey county line.

My father had been looking for weeks for us a house to rent and finally came upon a small two bedroom house located off of hwy 127. When we arrived I noticed alot of butterflies in my stomach but wrote that off as excitement.
When the owner let us into this house I have to say I was SWAMPED with emotion.
It was one of the most unsettling experiences to this day that has ever happened to me.

The feeling itself was of great sadness and despair, there was no sense of evil or anything of that nature. I remember I stopped right over the threshold of the front door and my mother asking me if I was okay, as I was a bit pale. I shook my head yes, and turned to go outside but it was almost as if something wanted me to stay, just for a bit, and the feeling lifted a bit. I can remember to the last detail what this house was like. Hardwood floors, slightly scarred in the living room, old fashioned fire place, white linoleum in the kitchen...
to the right was the hall way, first door on the left was the bathroom, done all in blue, and straight ahead was the bedrooms. The larger painted white with a mossy green carpet and the smaller painted white as well with a offwhite color carpet.

It was in the larger of the two bedrooms that the feeling was very concentrated. And I say this meaning, not that I began to get overwhelmed again but that the feeling was almost a tangible thing. I remember wandering around that room feeling as if I was being watched, but not in a bad way, but more as if something was simply curious as to why I was there. I could hear the owner in the kitchen explaining to my parents that should we choose to move in he would need first and last months rents (not unusual now but 20 years ago it was) as renters had a tendency to move out unexpectedly. I can honestly remember thinking "no wonder".

I won't bore you with details of the the closet, as there was nothing unusual about it other that it was very large. What WAS unusual though was the cold spot in the far right hand corner of the room. Between the hall way and that corner there had to be a good ten degree difference in temperature. I remember walking through the rest of the house, peeking my nose in here and there and then finally coming back to the living room and being charmed by the old styled fire place. For some reason it totally fascinated me. It had a huge hearth, where you could site close to the fire, and the outside of it was fieldstone.
While sitting there I felt a small breeze against the side of my cheek but there were no windows or doors open and the house itself had no central heat/air. I can remember my cheek became almost tingly after the caress.

We left shortly there after and ultimately DID wind up moving to Russell Springs. Years later I decided to do some research on this house and found several interesting facts. The house itself was built in 1912 and was lived in by the original owners until their deaths in 1954. The house was then sold to a couple who moved from Maryland to Kentucky. They were a young couple and very much wanted children. From what I gather they tried for years to have children to no avail. However they were very happy there. The gentleman passed away 1973 from cancer, and the lady lived there another 10 yrs before succumbing to cancer herself in 1983. She passed away in that house, taken care of by her sister, who then sold the house to a gentleman who wanted it as rental property. We viewed the house in 1985. It had been rented four times in that two year time span and three of the renters moved out unexpectedly. The ones that moved out with no notice all had children. The other renter was a single man who lived there, but had to relocate for his work.

I believe that this was the spirit of the lady who lived there, who enjoyed her time there with her husband but desperately wanted children of her own. Sadly this house burnt in 1998, and was not salvageable.
