    Freebird

Story By: M.H. (E-Mail Address Withheld)

On may 5th of 1984, my high school friend was murdered, and her body was left on a road east of Colorado Springs, she was only 18. During her funeral wake, a song from her favorite band, Lynyrd Skynyrd was played. The song was Freebird, and practically every time I heard the song after the wake, it was to be (for me), an indicator that she was present in one form or another.
Allow me to elaborate. About a month after the funeral, my friend and I had decided to visit the grave and place flowers upon it. The cemetery is surrounded by chain link fence and is locked up at night to keep the sick and the weird from vandalizing the place. Evergreen Cemetery is quite old and has headstones dating back to the early 1800s, needless to say, it is sort of a spooky place. At any rate, as my friend and I were driving through the gate, a strange thought had occurred to both of us at the same time. What if we got locked in this place? We just looked at each other and laughed, just a coincidence! Our visit took place in the middle of summer, on a weekday in the afternoon, certainly there was no reason for anyone to close the gate. My friend and I sat by her grave, and talked for about an hour, we then decided to leave.
As I recall, I said good-bye to her out loud and walked to my car. After I started the car my friend turned the radio up, lo and behold, Freebird was playing. The hair on the back of my neck seemed to be standing up, and I felt strange, sort of anxious and scared at the same time, it felt as though the air was electrified. We drove on, then as we approached the gate, we couldn't believe our eyes, it was padlocked closed. After kicking at the gate, cussing and feeling pretty scared, we decided to drive around to find a break in the fence, no luck! At that time I was seriously considering crashing through the gate with my 1970 Dodge Charger, the car that she had thought was so cool. We then decided to check the car for tools to take the roll away gate apart so that we could leave. The whole time we were there, I felt as though we were being watched, as though she may have wanted us to stay there with her a while longer.
Normally, I didn't carry tools in the car, this time however, I came up with a 1/2 inch wrench, which I found stuck under a mound of crud in the side compartment of the trunk between the rear quarter panel and the trunk floor. The 1/2 inch wrench was all we needed to take the gate apart and drive away. On numerous occasions following that day, I would think of her and would be reminded of her lingering presence by that damn song playing on the radio, always after I had thought about her.
Another incident involving this girl took place about two years after her death. As I was driving from Denver to Colorado Springs by myself early one morning,(about 2:00 a:m), I began to fall asleep at the wheel, there was no one else in my car, or so I thought. As I drifted off to sleep and veered toward the median, I heard freebird on the radio. I heard a female voice call me by my name, and then told me to wake up. I also distinctly saw something in the passenger seat out of the corner of my eye, then disappear as I became wide awake. Needless to say, I was definitely wide awake from there on and for the rest of the morning.
After about Three years, the incidents regarding my dead friend ceased to occur. I think, and hope that she is at peace and has moved on to wherever she was supposed to go.
Whatever you think is your business, I am not seeking anyone's acknowledgment or approval. All I know is that these accounts are real, and I felt that this is a proper forum for sharing this with people who have had a similar experience with this sort of phenomenon.

    Sincerely, M.H

    Dear Barry,

Thank you for putting my true paranormal account on your website, I am pleased that you decided to include the song, (Freebird), with the page. I appreciate that my friend has been honored in what I consider to be a tasteful way. I was a bit hesitant to post my story on the Internet for fear of being bothered by that fabled tribe of the inquisitive people that surf the web, that is why I choose to remain anonymous and to omit actual names from my accounts.
(WEBMASTERS NOTE: As with all stories submitted to PARA-4, your anonymity will be preserved unless otherwise noted by the submitter. As with the story Freebird, many paranormal sightings can be a deeply moving and personal experience. We here at PARA-4, understand and appreciate this fact.)
I would like to share with you another incident surrounding my deceased friend. This account involves the friend that accompanied me on my trip to the cemetery on the summer day that he and I were locked in. This friend, (I shall refer to as James), was working in Littleton Colorado at Martin Marietta, a defense contractor for the government, not long after the untimely death of our female friend.
James worked with a woman, I believe her name was Linda, who had claimed to be psychic and to see unusual things. James had considered this woman to be strange and tended to avoid her when at all possible. One morning, James was approached by this self proclaimed psychic and paraseer, she told him that she saw a spirit accompanying him down the hall at work. Linda had also proceeded to describe the appearance of this spirit, knew her first name, as well as the date, and cause of death. Bear in mind that James had not spoken to his coworker about the death at all, prior to her approach.
Linda had also shared with James that sometimes the spirit would not be present with him, but would sometimes accompany another friend, meaning myself. By Linda's account, our dead friend was lingering around to reassure and try to comfort us, partly because of the profound sadness and sense of loss that James and I had felt due to her passing, and partly because she wanted to watch out for us.
Neither James nor I had ever really experienced the loss of anyone we had liked so well, this event was sort of a loss of innocence for both of us. I had a love interest in this girl that sadly never came to fruition, I never got to tell her of my true feelings for her while she was alive, but it is clear to me that she knew, because she stayed around for quite sometime after her passing.
I do however think that she has moved on, I no longer feel her occasional presence about me, I haven't for about ten years now.
ps: Feel free to publish this account on your web site if you wish, All that I ask is that you maintain my anonymity.
    Sincerely,

    M.H. ~Free Bird~

    If I leave here tomorrow
    Would you still remember me?
For I must be travelling on, now,
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see.
But, if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you can not change.
And the bird you can not change.
And the bird you can not change.
    Lord knows, I can't change.

Bye, bye, babe, it's been sweet, love.
Though this feeling I can't change.
But please don't take it so badly,
'Cause Lord knows I'm to blame.
But, if I stayed here with you girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you'll never change.
And the bird you can not change.
And the bird you can not change.
    Lord knows, I can't change.
Lord help me, I can't change.
    Lord, I can't change
    Won't you fly, free bird.
